This podcast is about a new solo exhibition by David Hanes called Still Alive. The show opens on October 7, 2022, at 6pm at Mott Projects in Catskill, NY. The show’s body of work demonstrates David’s decision to turn away from his more critical, conceptual and minimal art-making and point towards a new practice rooted in method, technique and study. The title, Still Alive, emerged from conversations Hanes had with John Vincent Campbell on the CKTH podcast. Still Alive embodies where David is in his painting, self-leadership and his voice as a creator.
Based on pastel drawings done during Hanes’s travels, these paintings purposely present themselves as blocky or roughly resolved in order to convey the energy and aurora that Hanes experienced while creating them. His emphasis on the philosophy of painting, the living of it, becomes in itself a process of acceptance, and his work is transformed into not just a passing experience but an account of living in a body and a world that is ever changing.
David Hanes (b. 1987) is a visual artist. He originally hails from Toronto, Canada and now lives in Berlin, Germany. His work ranges from drawing, painting, photography and sculpture. And, as a continued student of both the classic antiquities as well as modern technology, David brings unique perspective and mindfulness into his daily approach to both art making, as well as living with gratitude.
