What actually makes a zipper "waterproof"?

Most wetsuit zippers on the market are not actually waterproof. At best, they're water-resistant. Which means a standard metal or plastic chain with a laminated tape that slows water down, without ever truly stopping it. Over time, especially at the elements where the teeth interlock, water finds its way through.

Conversely, YKK's AquaSeal is built differently. It's engineered around a specialized, gapless element structure combined with a film-coated tape, which together create a continuous seal rather than a series of small gaps between teeth.
