Spirituals by Santigold is the Philadelphia-born singer songwriter’s latest release and fourth studio album. It features a varying sample of instrumentals: ranging from dub to hyper pop. It is modern and hard hitting — but delicate when it needs to be.
Thematically, Spirituals is relatable and honest. Santigold positions herself on the album as both an idyllic leader in a turbulent world, but also someone painfully aware of their own shortcomings. In this sense, the album is laced with moments that may seem familiar to longtime Santigold fans.
Expressions of triumph and self-love, are prevalent as ever, but Spirituals also explores Santigold’s humility in a way that’s new, refreshing and endearing. While previous Santigold albums often play up their braggadocious and overly narcissistic lyricism in a tongue in cheek way, the successes underlined on Spirituals feel hard-earned and serious.
In this respect, the sacrifices are the focus here, rather than the achievements.
