Phony Tough brings together a body of work that considers the precarious tension between power, the effort required to maintain it, and the vulnerability concealed within that dynamic.
Soft sculpture and tufted paintings depicting imagery drawn largely from fascist emblems, the work focuses on the instability beneath displays of masculinity, strength, and certainty. By translating these symbols into soft and vulnerable forms, the work asks what holds such performances together and what happens when they begin to falter
